Hi,

I have just set up my new tank and transfered all on my stock. The tank is 3 feet x 21" x 24" and has a capacity of 270 litres.

I have soft corals at the moment mainly Xenia, mushroom and zoanthias.

Would I be able to add any hard corals as well. The lighting is sufficient for them but I have read that they can kill each other in a small tank.

Thanks for any advice.

Only a novice here but if you use carbon and clean the carbon frequently you will have no problems.

I have Xenia, Mushrooms, Rics and Zoas in my tank with Blasto, Torch, Frogspawn and Fungia with no carbon at all I beleve it is mostly leathers that emit toxins I am sure one of the more experinced reefers will correct me if wrong ;)

Oops forgot even have a small SPS frag in mine montipora digitata :)

Sarcophyton, Lemnaila, Sinularia, Nepthea, Lobophyton and Cespitularia are known produce toxic compunds. Corallimorpharians (mushrooms) are also thought to produce some although this is under investagtion, but seems of significant value.

The process is known as Allelopathy and carbon can be used to help when keeping these corals with hard corals.

Personally I run carbon all the time at the same amount and replace regularly.

Hmm Have Corallimorpharians in my tank maybe i will add some carbon in to my flow did not realise these emitted toxins.

At the time Borneman wrote THE BOOK, this was under investigation, however I believe there is something found as many people who move over to keeping lots of SPS corals, also seem to get rid of their mushrooms.

Ski may be able to help a little more here.
