i live in corona ca. our tap water is so hard that it is off the charts. i filled the tank with the hard water. i swiched to using out soft water system. it uses potassium instead of salt. would the potasssium have any affect on the water what about when i test the water? thanks

Potassium can adversely affect your fishes' hearts. Water from any soft of softening system is ill-advised in an aquarium. Even hard water is preferable, I'm afraid.

If I understood right, you asked "Does potassium (=kalium, K) affect hardness?" - right?

No, because hardness of water means how much there is earth-alkaline metal ions, usually Ca2+ ja Mg2+, in water (sometimes Ba, Sr, Fe, Cu, Al, Zn... too).

Im not sure, but I think some even uses potassium as softener like sodium too (ion-exchanger). So when you take test, K+ doesn't affect test result.
