I just set up a small tank using a used hanging heater that had been given to me as a backup. I don't know how low I am able to bring the water down before I should be shutting the heater off and letting it cool. Is the whole thing, only the part that houses the coil, somewhere in between?

Make a habit of unplugging the heater every time you do a water change. Trust me! The one time you don't think about it and take out a bit too much... BOOM!

there should be a line somewhere on it that says the min and max water levels for the heater. but follow hamlet's words of wisdom and "Make a habit of unplugging the heater every time you do a water change. Trust me! The one time you don't think about it and take out a bit too much... BOOM!"

I agree, unplug the heater before dropping the water level.
