Hi,

just bought 3 Halequins and wondered if they liked anything other than usual flake food. I've got some bloodworms left over from my sadly now diceased Cherry Barbs - will the Halequins eat them?
While I'm at it is there anything in particular I should know about this type of fish?

Cheers

Geoff

Yup... mine like bloodworms too! The thing I've found is that they look much better in larger groups as they are one of the best schooling fishes out there. I have 12 of them in my tank, and they look great. Can your tank/budget handle more of them?

Blood worms are great for them, and so are just about any other food I have tried so far. There isn't any food I own that they don't eat, infact...

The only thing you should be aware is that they tend to feed only on the floating food - I have never observed them eat anything that is falling towards the bottom.

Hi,

thanks for all the info. They certainly are great looking fishing, very lively too. I'm definitely going to get some more ;) As YHBEA said they don't seem to eat from the bottom is there any way of containing the bloodworms where the fish can eat them without them dropping to the bottom because they're a bugger to clean up after!

Also, how can I tell the sex? One has a black stripe on its bottom fin (sorry don't know the name of it!) and is slightly larger than the others?

Cheers

like most egg layers the females tend to be more plump than the males also some say that the triangle of the males is very well defined while females have a less defined triangle. Also here is a pic that identifies a male and female. Good Luck :)

I guess I never had to worry about that since I only fed freeze dried blood worms which float.

You have a good advise already on how to sex them. It does become quite obvious after a year or so - female is quite fat compare to the male. And also that black triangle which can also be used but some of mine are kind of hard to tell just by looking at the black triangle.

There are little feed traps you can buy, but I don't know if they'll work for frozen foods. The food just might ooze right out.

What I do is thaw it on a spoon, then drop it in from the spoon little by little, just enough each time so it all gets on its way down.
