i have a similar algae problem but (this is going to be a long list):
1. i dont want to use chemicals
2. i dont use co2 or a fertiliser for my plants and i dont fancy getting anything i cant get from pets at home
3. (probably the most annoying one) i have a snail and so would like to keep as much none-hair algae as possible for him / her to eat.
also when i pull it off the plants, i drop a bit and its getting into the filter and catching on the motor (at least i presume thats what the rattling sound is.
EDIT: actually the list isnt as long as i thought itd be
