i bought alot of different patterned and textured paper from michaels craft store for some art projects a while ago and came across it today in my closet
one is a thick card stock that was crumpled then ironed flat then dyed so there is alot of darker spots and i thought it would make a cool background. but the sheet was only 12''x12'' so i went to michaels and bought some more and tore them up and glued them together to make it the right size.
if you want to do it i would suggest tearing the edges and glueing them together b/c if you just lay them over each other and glue/use tape you can see the strait edges, but if you tear them and glue you cant tell where one sheet ends and the other begins.
it looks really nice and when i get a chance i will post some pics of it! looks kinda like one big sheet of rock or something. i used a dark tan color but they have it in red, blue, brown and a few other colors.
the sheets are about $1.00 a piece and i used three for my 20g (24''x 15'') so in all it cost me about $3.00.
dont know if that is considered pricey for a background because i have never purchased any but it was fun to make and has really cool texture.
