Unfortunately, things won't get any better until the tank is cycled. Fish always suffer if put into a new tank. Please read the threads on fishless cycling. Did you tell your LFS you'd only just set up your tank when they sold you the fish?.

How is the poor ropefish now?

Get him out of there and into a bigger home. Even if he gets better the stress of the small tank will just destroy his soul!
