Caught my little habrosus cories spawning the other day. It was so cool.

I don't have any plans of picking out the eggs to care for them specifically as I don't really have the space at the moment. But maybe in the future I'll set up a tank for breeding them.

It surprised the crap out of me though, as I recently had two mysterious deaths and less than pristine water quality (had random, mysterious crud build up). But all's good now.

Here's a picture of the mommy holding an egg.

Hi karawr :)

That's wonderful! I hope that you do decide to breed them in the future. I'd love to follow their progress with you.

Aww bless :)

I had my pygmys & habrosus spawn last year, the pygmy fry made it but the habrosus didnt...

I hope they spawn again for you in the future :good:

It really was cool. I'd love it if they did it again, even if it was only to watch!!

Are habrosus hard to spawn? And are they more timid?

The reason I ask is because they are in a 20g with 8 black phantom tetras. Before I got the tetras they would be out and swimming, albeit a little timid when I got near the tank. Now with the tetras they hide a lot in a back corner. Or is this the tetras being territorial?

those eggs wont last 2 seconds with the tetras i would have thought...

How many do you have? The more there are, the more secure they will feel. My pandas are/were the same way. When I had only two, but there were only their "normal" tankmates (3 rasboras and 2 zebras) they were out and about. Then, I got more rasboras and more pandas, but the pandas became more reclusive. On Friday, I picked up 6 more pandas (a total of 11 now) and they are all over the bottom, ironically the new (smaller) pandas are the most out and about, and they actually draw the adults out more often. I also rescaped the bottom a little to give them some new "hiding" places that are more "in sight" for me. I took out the visual impedance to their favorite corner, and they are hanging out more in spots that I can see them.

I would say that increasing the number of the cories to about a dozen or more would probably be a help to get them more visible. (Assuming you still have room for additional stock.)

A group of 10+ works best with small cories... and c.habrosus are not shy at all when in a suitably large group.

Babies, otoh, seem very skittish and dislike light...but very cute.. here is one 0.5" 2 month old:

Cuutee.

Yes, I thought the tetras would eat them too... and I believe they have eaten some. There were a couple on the glass and it looks like they've been picked off. But there are a couple hiding in the moss and on the bottom of plant leaves that are still safe...

And I used to have 10, but two died so now there's 8. Unfortunately I can't go out and buy more (as we don't have them locally) but I'm hoping a couple of fry will survive to bump up the numbers. :good:
