Hey guys and gals....

So my 2 month old tank is going well.... except for the fact that my guppys wont swim anywhere except for just below the surface of the water.... Is this normal behavior for these guys or is it a sign that something is up?

All my other fish seem ok

Also... after reading the breeding tips on Guppys....is there any fish that guppys dont like and wont give birth in a tank with?

Cheers for reading!

Have you been testing the readings of your tank.. ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?
Hanging out at the top too often is definitely a sign that something is wrong.
Every single guppy we have had that died on us have always shown signs that something is wrong by hanging out at the surface too much.

Cheers, Ill go buy one on my way home.... I have never tested the water so i guess its time to go get one.

Is there an all in one kit with all the testes in it i can get?

Look around for master test kits.Guppies however do spend alot of there time up the top of the tank.Alll the common tests are pH, kH (carbonated hardness), gH (Generel hardness),Ammonia, nitrite (No2) ,nitrate.

Ok, I have guppies and mine hang out at the top of the tank nearly all the time except when they're playing in the current from the filter, there's nothing wrong with my tank at all :)

i have a tank full of guppies and they too spent most their time at the top. and i was always told it was normal

Oh Ok..... on a side note.... it has a fluval 4 filter in it at the moment that has quite a strong output current.... should i leave it pumping away or should I turn the current down? Just wondered .....

well i have 2 guppies and i always turn off the filter for a while cause it makes it hard for them to eat...but i would leave it pumping away. :)

I have mine on the middle setting and the guppies love it, they play in the current a lot, so leave it pumping away :) I used to turn mine off when I fed the fish but now that the valesneria (however it's spelt!) has grown the leaves stop the food from being swept away and make it easy for everyone to get to.

you may have answered your own question. They may enjoy playing in the current so much that they just stay there. =P Just my opinion

I used to keep guppies quite a long time ago and they spent nearly all their time at the surface. They seemed to really enjoy surface plants which probably made for a more interesting home for them and had them exploring the tank a bit more.

You know, it amazes me that the fish store employees don't try to sell test kits to people. They tell them all sorts of junk that usually isn't true and get the to buy pH adjusters, stuff to clear the water, and all sorts of other chemicals but dont' try to sell a $25 test kit.

I guess I should've said that heh... the guppies we've had also like hanging at the top, but when something is wrong they don't leave the top at all.
The ones we've had when healthy would swim all around the tank and sleep up at the top, but I guess it depends on setup.

If the guppies are acting fine eating, swimming normal, etc etc then as others have pointed out, they may just like hanging out at the top.
You should still get that test kit though! heh No test strips... only get liquid testers.

My adult guppies stay at the top and occasionally go to the middle, the fry stay at the bottom and in the plants. My danios whizz around in the middle.
