HI

last nite i switched off my power filter becuz it was making such a terrible noise and this morning whern i switched it back on and switched on the light one of my 4 guppys had a white lip. wat can b the cause of this.????

HELP PLZ  :-( :look:  :byebye: she mite be dying. PLZ HELP

I am not sure what you mean by a white lip but one thing you should never do is shut off your filter for a long time. The bacteria colony could completely die off in a short time depending on your tank parameters.
Is the guppy's lip white like fungus? cottony? or the color has just turned white with no other difference to the skin around the mouth?

What are your water parameters now. If there is high ammonia or nitrites the fish may have the beginning of columnaris if it is maracyn is something that will treat it.

it just turned white and nothing else is white. i dont understand

What are your water parameters now. After you turned off the filter last night you may have high ammonia or nitrites and you will need to know this as soon as possible.

Hi Bea/\/ :)

Is it white and fuzzy looking? If it looks like some kind of fungus it's a bacterial infection.

If you know your water parameters, and temperature, please tell me. I'd also like to know how often you do water changes and how much water you remove. Do you clean the gravel when you do this?

Also, is the guppy new, or have you recently added any new fish to the tank? Do you frequently turn off the filter? :dunno:

These things will help me decide if it's Columnaris and if so I can tell you how to treat it.

well its too late now. shes gone :byebye: since i dont have a water test kit im taking my water to the lfs to test agen. now i have 3 lonely female guppys in my 10 gal. and i change the water twice a week and i clean the gravel three times a month.

Hi Bea/\/ :)

I'm so sorry to learn that you lost your guppy. :byebye:

But let me explain what I think happened so you can take care of the ones you have and prevent the same thing from happening again.

Columnaris Flexibacter is a bacteria that causes a variety of symptoms in fish and is very common. This bacteria can always be found in a tank, but if the fish are otherwise healthy, it causes no harm. But certain things can stress a fish and make it more susceptible to infection.

Some of these stressors are overcrowded conditions, uneaten food in the tank, high nitrites, low oxygen content in the water, sudden rise in temperature, infrequent water changes or aggressive fish in the tank.

When you turned off the filter, you also cut off the water circulation that helped the water pick up oxygen from the surface. This is a condition that could cause the Columnaris bacteria to suddenly increase, while your beneficial bacteria died, especially if the temperature is high.

Columnaris can act very quickly, once it attacks a fish, or it can develop slowly. It can look like a fungusy growth on a fish's mouth or body or it can look like finrot. It can even kill a fish with no symptoms.

Right now I suggest you give your tank a good bottom cleaning and water change to get it back to normal, and watch your other fish for symptoms for a week or so before adding any new fish.

Your cleaning schedule is good and under normal circumstances would probably have gone a long way toward keeping your fish healthy.

Don't worry, your tank will indeed get back to normal. It's just so much better to be cautious once you know you have had a problem.
