Can anyone tell me why my guppies always seem to be at the surface of the water........I have a jewel 180 with gouramis, plecs, corydoras, baby mollies, clown loach, coolie loaches and a few other species in there yet all the guppies seem to floating near the top of the water......they are all eating fine and the temp of the water is currently 25......none of the other fish are doing this......can anyone help me........

guppies gathered at the top of the tank usually means a PH change. Guppies can survive in a wide range of PH 6.2-7.8 but do not like changes in PH and when this happens they often gather at the surface of the tank. Check your PH and ensure that it is fairly constant. If it has changed any since the last time you checked then look for things that have changed since then. If you have done any water changes in the past few days perhaps the PH of your water has changed so check your tap water to see if the parameters have changed. HTH :)

the ph is 7.8 .........is this too high.......

It is on the high side for guppies but still OK. The big thing is has the PH changed over the last few days, as it would be a change in PH that would bother them. How long have they been in the tank?

we purchased the tank and guppys from a lady who lived in a softer water area......and due to a few water changes since we have had it......had it about a month i guess the ph could of changed as we live in a very hard water area.....we have a couple of guppys who have been in our original tank since we purchased them and they seem fine as they are still in our original tank....it just seems like the guppys who we had from the lady with her tank have suddenly started staying at the surface.........could this be as we have done water changes the ph has altered changing the way they are........

sounds like a real possibility. AS this would result in a significant PH change in a fairly short period of time. Keep up with the water changes and keep an eye on them. Thsi is one of those type of things where now that the process has started it must be followed through and hopefully all fish will make it. You could add some stress coat or perhaps melafix to help ease the transition for these fish and help reduce the stress issue. Also sometimes i find that keeping the lights on less helps reduce the stress. Good Luck and hope everyone makes it. :)

Thank you for all your help and advice.............will keep posted...cheers mate
