What is the KH of your water, and also of your mother's water?
If your KH is low, and your mother's is reasonably high, it would explain why you have the problem and she doesn't appear to. Guppies, in common with the other common livebearers, need hard water to survive. Their bodies need to absorb minerals in the water, so if these minerals are not present (ie low KH) they will suffer.
