Guppy Giving Birth

Well I divided the tank, so that the adults have 2/3 of the tank. And the other 1/3 is for the fry to hide from the adults. Only the fry can go through the divider so that the adults can't eat them when they are on the 1/3 side. I added plants to the 2/3 so that when the female gives birth, the fry will have somewhere to hide. I'll try to get a picture soon.

Are you sure the fry can fit through the divider? My dividers have very small holes fry couldn't fit through...but your's are probably different. Also, I wouldn't count on them going through. Most of them will end up on the adult side...I've had dividers in fry tanks before, because I needed to put a Betta in, and I never found any fry that went through the divider...but hey, maybe you have smart fry. :D

Hopefully they do..but yea, there are really large holes. Even my two week fry can go through the divider. So newborn fry can definately go through, unless they are giant frys LOL. Wait..if you have small holes, how could the fry go through? I have large holes, so maybe the fry will go through. Why didn't the fry go through the divider?

Isaac

I had a different divider then, but the Betta decided it was too easy to knock down... :/

Maybe your's will go through. But some see it as a barrier, and don't realize there are little holes ment for them...and they are more content to stay in their various hiding places then go get cornered. Some might go through, but I wouldn't count on all of them going there. Or staying there if they go through. :p

Very nice! Yes, your divider has much bigger holes then my current ones do. It will be interesting to see when you get back if any are in there. We'll see just how smart fry are... Anyway, I'm betting a few will figure it out. I'd put some plants and decorations over there too, just to make them feel safe. :)

Annastasia, YOU ARE THE BEST
I love how you answer questions so thoroughly and help the best you can.

I'm just praying that the fry will learn and go over there. There are two fry already in there, they were born two weeks ago. They haven't went across the divider yet, even though they are small enough.

Isaac

Awww...you flatter me! I'm so glad to know people appreciate my help though! Thank you very much. :D

Ah, so you have a few fry in there already, but I am guessing you put them in there? So them not going across the divider could be 2 things. Seeing it as a barrier, or being smart enough to know Mommy and Daddy are over there, yet Mom and Dad won't hesitate to eat them. I'm hoping it's the second, because then that will work out well for you! :)

And do you feed any Live, Frozen, or Freeze-dried foods? Because if you do, your sister could put some over in the divided area for the fry, and perhaps the fry will see the yummy food and head over there. Just a thought.

Hmm..that sounds like a good idea. I give my fry powdered freeze-dried bloodworms. I think that the fry will appreciate it.

Yes I put the fry in there, and they have not crossed the divider yet...maybe they can see the adults over there, because the male and female have been trying to attack the fry when they were in the floating cup, scaring them.

Even if the two week fry see it as a barrier, I think the newborn fry won't because the fry are now a lot larger than when they were born.

Isaac

Try putting some pebbles or a piece of slate in your tank, the fry will hide in beetween or underneath them.
Good luck.

The two week old fry went through the divider, so now I know they don't think it as a barrier. However, I see the adult guppies chasing the fry, but can't seem to get it. The fry swims away so quickly, it takes time for me to look for it again. Why are the fry swimming so fast that the adult can't eat them? I thought you said that most of them would get eaten. Is it because their already two weeks old, and can swim faster now?

Isaac

Fry can travel at an amazing rate very soon after birth, but they do sometimes get caught off guard and are eaten. Some will most likely be eaten as soon as they are born before they are able to swim out of the way. Dense plants and stones will help to keep them alive.
