i had cycled my tank for months, and bought 3 female guppies, and stupidly, but i couldnt resist, a red tailed shark. i have another tank which isnt quite ready yet.

2 of the females died, as i was trying to condition the tank, but i'm sure it was the shark that killed one and the other pretty much died the first day. now i looked in the tank, and theres about 40 or more babies, and the one female, i have seen online some do it yourself birthing traps, so have made a half milk bottle (plastic) cleaned it with a lot of water and scrubbing, and made loads of holes in it, and have put all the babies in there with the mother.

is that the right thing to do?

i cut the milk bottle in half, removed the top part, took off the sticker, and scrubed it clean with a clean sponge and water. then made holes in it, put some paper clips though and made them like hooks, and hooked it on the side of the tank.

the mom might still eat the babies in there so watch them..if shes done birthing take her out of there cause she will eat em eventually

Welcome to our forum RogueKiller.
It is likely that your fish has gone through a typical fry drop and is hungry and ready for a male to approach her. Rather than place her in a trap with the fry, I would have only the fry in that isolated situation while the female would be left to fend for herself. As it turns out, female livebearers are often the first among many to be predators on the fry population. If you can separate the female from the fry, the fry will have a far better chance at survival.
