Help!! I purchase some fish from Walmart a couple days ago to put in my sons 5.5 gallon setup. I let the tank run for 4 or 5 days before I went and bought a fish. This morning I noticed this guppy male seems to be having problems so I decided to take him out of the tank and put him in his own little bowl. there's nothing in his mouth and I can see but he keeps opening his mouth and it doesn't seem like he can close it

I'm  not sure about the mouth but I wanted to post a link about cycling your fish tank which will become important information to you especially if you are new to fish keeping.

Putting fish in an uncycled tank (explanations in the link) means that ammonia builds to a toxic level very quickly and this can (and will) cause many problems for your fish and will be life threatening to them.

Ive had a few issues with guppys regarding their mouths and i always put it down to way too much inbreeding, it may not be the case here but its possibly a reason.

Id look into cylcing your tank as prairiesunflower has said also as that can, and usually will cause alot of problem for any fish you put in your tank.

i would agree please read the beginner section lots of helpful info there

I’m thinking you bought a diseased fish you say, you got it a couple of days ago. It’s got no body shape to  It surly it didn’t go. That’s skinny within a couple of days.

That may probably be true fish48, but being in a tank with ammonia building up isn't going to help  Running the tank for 4-5 days does absolutely nothing in preparing it for fish. I agree with Zikofski. Brilly and Prairie - that tank needs cycling before fish are added.
Lizzybelle do you know someone with an established tank who would look after them whilst you cycle your tank?
Or could you get Walmart to take them back until it is ready?
