I am upgrading my tank from a twenty gallon long to a forty gallon and was wanting to add different fish along with my twelve guppies. Any suggestions as to what fish that are compatible with guppies I can add and the amount of fish of each species? Thank you!

There area lot of species that are compatible with guppies.

Might be helpful if you can suggest some species that you like the look of.

I would suggest you to give a list on this post of species that you like then we can help with numbers and if suitable etc

There are tons of options :D What do you like? What are your water parameters (hardness)? What kind of substrate do you use? Many fish like sand. You should consider that before setting up your new tank.

Congrats on your new 40Gal! :)

Maybe here are some options you can ponder upon:
1) Mid-Level Swimmers (maybe a nice Schooling Fish)
2) Bottom Dwellers (maybe pygmy or Panda cories)
3) And if you intend to showcase your guppies as the main stars of the tank, maybe a dwarf/honey gourami just to complement their colours and activeness

Well, these are just my opinion.. I may be wrong about the options i gave you but I'm sure help will be on the way! :)

I'm planning on getting fine sand for the substrate as well as a few live plants along with the plastic ones I have. I'm pretty much open to any fish but would like some colorful ones. I was thinking about dwarf gouramis but don't know how many I should get of them to keep them happy. I also want to get some bottom dwellers but again not sure how many. Would tetras work in te tank and if so how many?

Other options:
Angelfish (could these work with guppies in a forty gal.?)
Rasboras
Killifish
Danios
Cichlids
Betta (have a friend with a betta who'd rather not keep him anymore but I know some bettas are fine with guppies while others are not)

I'd not go for the dwarf gourami (as I believe that to be hit or miss) and probably not the Angelfish either.

Honey gourami can be quite nice.  I am new to them myself, my current two (I did lose two) are absolutely docile and lovely.  My previous two who died were more boisterous.

Rasboras are nice.  I like a lot of different tetra as well.  Other livebearers work well, such as platies.

If I had another tank, I'd totally get a few panda cories... I think they are super cute!

I second no angelfish, When I was younger I had an otherwise peaceful community tank with some guppies and within a week of adding the angelfish most of them disappeared. Perhaps look into some blue rams? Danios should also go well with guppies, and I used to keep rummy-nose and lemon tetras with mine as well with no problems.
