Guppy Breeding

Sorry to overrule you fishyfeet, but the earlier post you made about 40 fry from one guppy is only the average and they can have over 100 at times!

I take it that you were reffering to the average when you said that though. ;)
just going by my own experiences, sometimes 30 something, sometimes 50 odd, so yes its an average number and probably nearly the min.

Guppies can produce up to 150 fry at one time. the origonal guppie used to be a good couple of inches long but due to breaders over bread they have lost size and a lot of their colour.

Thanks for the replys everyone

I have just brought a multibreeder so i can put the 3 female guppies in there. Hopfully i will see some fry tomorrow :) Also is there anything i should know about breeding traps?

Thanks ozric

I wouldn't reccomend putting more then one female in the trap at a time unless its a BIG trap. The less space you give your fish, the more stressed it will be, so you don't want to over crowd it or your females may just abort the fry. Also, don't put your female in ahead of time. I usually wait to the point that my female looks so fat she's square and her "area" looks very swollen to the point that it protrudes out, or until you start actually seeing fry in the tank. Its when people put their females in the trap a week to even a couple days in advance, is when the female gets too stressed in that confined space. Remember a breeder trap is a supposed to be a place for relaxtion and seclusion(from any pesky males) during the time she's giving birth. Putting her in before will only stress her. :)
