I had 2 guppies but recently one of them passed away from an unknown cause. I was wondering if I should get more guppies or just keep the one that i have by himself?

if you get your tank in order guppies are super easy to breed. 1 male 4 females u will get a ton if tank is setup u can even sell them to people/ pet stores. gotta get that tank right.

If you want plenty of fry, guppies is the way to go. I put 8 guppies in my 30 gallon shrimp tank about 3 months ago and now I have 60-70 or more fry. I had to remove the females just to get them to stop! You may want to find out what sex your guppy is and buy another of the same sex to be safe.

How big is the tank?
Is it just one guppy left or other fish?
Filtration?
You shouldn’t get anymore fish until you know what it died from. What are your water parameters?

I have a 5.5 gallon tank with very good filtration. I only have one guppy left and no other fish. The only problem is I don’t know why they died.

Is it bad to keep the guppy by itself after it lived a life with other guppies, or will he be fine alone?

Guppies have lots of babies. Because they are more prone to illnesses and bottom of the food chain. 5 gal tank is small for Guppies but if u just have one as a pet it's a fine size. U still need a good environment. This includes good filter system and heat source.

I believe the question u are asking if it is humaine to keep one guppy fish. It's a hard for us to answer because that's like asking is it humaine to have Aquarium fish at all. If u looking for thoughts. Mine is there is nothing wrong with having one Guppy fish that u provide the best care u can for. Just know its life span is short. And they are reproductive fish.

If your water is wrong then any fish up put in will die. This is not because of tank size or having single fish. It's to make sure u give your pet a good home so they don't get sick and die.

For clarification:

Water parameters are pH, GH, KH and temperature.
Water conditions are ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Ideally we need both.

Any ammonia or nitrite in the water is bad for fish. Nitrate above 20 ppm is bad for fish.

GH and pH requirements vary according to fish species. Guppies are hard water fish so they need a high GH and a pH above 7.

If your water parameters are bad, getting more guppies will only make it worse. Fix your water quality, then get more guppies. Good luck. :)
