I have a small box filter for the smaller tank.

I really can't believe I've killed 30 fish, I can guarantee I won't be going without test kits again.

Thanks again for all your help

Good! transfer a bit of your gravel over in to the 2 gallon. Some of your good bacteria will go with it.

We all make mistakes when we first try things - what's important is that you are willing to learn from your mistakes, and I can tell you are!

Good luck.

I'm in the UK too and I swear by the interpet range of meds.

It sounds like the one you need is Number 8, "Anti Fungus & FinRot"

Good luck!

Right, well, I lost everyone in the hospital tank but have still got eight guppies and all nine tetras. The fish all appear to be healthy (except for one tetra who has just developed a patch of fungus on his top fin) but are suffering a fair bit from stress I think, one male in particular. They are quite flitty and like to hide themselves and some of the females have very dark eyes. Is this a sign of the ammonia? They're eating well (I've cut back on the food to help reduce the ammonia) which I was really pleased about. What do you think the chances of survival for these fish are?

The ammonia is now at nil and has been for a couple of days, but I'm still medicating the water with the eSHa 2000 and I'm awaiting delivery of my other test kits.

I'd appreciate any more advice anyone can give.

Thanks!

Hmmm - I don't know if the dark eyes are a sign of ammonia poisoning. I really glad to here that you ammonia level is zero, though, that's good! I would do daily 10% water changes, and perhaps keep a good eye on the tetra - fungus is contagious. I'm sorry you lost the gups in the hospital tank. It's always hard.

Well I lost that tetra too and from reading up on his symptoms it seems more likely that he had neon tetra disease. From the poor water I assume? I took him out and hospitalised him because I read that it's down to parasites. The eSHa 2000 says it treats the disease but it hasn't impressed me so far. Is it likely do you think that they'll all get it?

The guppies have improved. I don't think me peering in to check on them every 20 seconds is helping them calm down

 Maybe seeing your face is making them happy and calm?

I'm glad at least some of your fish are getting better. Unfortunately, I know virtually nothing about neons - You might want search the forums old messages about neon tetra disease, or start a new thread about it. I'm afraid I'm not much help on that one! :/

You've been more than enough help already, and no-one else seems to have been affected so far *crosses fingers* thanks! :D

Here's the results from my test kit then :

Nitrate between 25 - 50 mg/l
NItrite 0mg/l
GH About 10 DH (possibly 6, quite hard to tell)
KH 6 DH
pH somewhere between 7.6 and 8.0, again, hard to tell

What do we think?

Ammonia and nitrita are at zero, and that's what you want. Nitrate should be under 40 or 50 - I really try to keep mine under 20. Live plants will absorb some nitrate and water changes will get it down if it goes too high. your pH is a little high, but I'd only be concerned if it is different then the pH of your tap water. Tap water can contain nitrates, too, so it'd be a good idea to test water out of your tap. Put it in a glass or something so that it can sit for a few minutes out of the tap, then test it. This will give us an idea of your base values.
