Guess My Fish?

Hey Jodielee54, Just wanna ask why did you purchase the pleco the first place? If you're looking for a fish to eat the algae on walls of your fish tank, pleco is not suitable in a small tank. The Chinese algae eater is a better choice.

You did mentioned earlier that all your fish died accept for this fish. Well all I can say is that this fish is a hardy type of fish. They are strong fish. They can stand without water for quite sometimes.

And I have an experience, they didn't die even they get electrical shock.

So that's some of the reason I can tell why your fish still survive. B)

Yes, like everyone said, pleco can grow very big. So you need a large space for them, otherwise your pleco will be stunted.

Well you can mix small pleco with small fish (guppies, tetras and etc) but bear in mind they will grow big, so it won't be surprising to see small fish disappear.

I would suggest large chiclid will be suitable with pleco.

If you are not planning to keep big fish, then you should give the pleco away or maybe sell it. you could proabably earn some money as your fish has grown. :thanks:

I bought the fish because he was with a load of alge eaters, I asked for a couple of them & this fish came with them. He wasnt a large fish when we bought him & imho he isnt really a large fish now, we've had him about 6 months now so he's about 4inches long the most, he's been this size for some months. I have mentioned im getting a bigger tank, so this fish wont be going anywhere.

Chinese algae eaters are the absolute worst algae eater in the world. Here is the profile from TFF on them (please note the "mod edit" near the bottom of the profile and comments by other posters). They will become extremely aggresive as they get older and larger (to about 6") and will stop eating algae (don't eat much even when young). They will begin to attack other fish and try to suck the slime coat off them, especially flat bodied fish like gouramis and angel fish.

If you want a good, small algae eater, try a Siamese Algae Eater. They are harder to find but will do a good job and get along fine with other fish. Algae eating shrimp are also a good option, especially for a small tank like yours.

Hi all thanks for the replys, me and my finace went to look at bigger tanks for him this afternoon, and to our suprise, they wernet as expensive as we thought, so we will be gettin a bigger tank for him v soon :good:

Just another quick question, do you think it would be ok to keep a siamese fighter with him? Dont want to buy if theyre not going to get on - :thanks:

A betta should be fine with a pleco. Plecos are very peaceful and are basically bottom feeders. Bettas are usually fine with most tropical fish except those with large, fancy tails (angels, guppies) and fin nippers (danios, some species of tetras). They think anything with a large tail is another betta and will fight it. The fin nippers are bad for obvious reasons.

So would it be ok to keep a betta with my pleco?? He's never had a problem with any of the fish we have kept with him in the past.

yup, betta is ok with pleco.

but in my opinion, the tank gonna be dull isn't it?

No more dull than it is with just a pleco in it - what about Neon Tetras?? would they be ok with my pleco??

yup neons are ok too. in fact most fish get along well with pleco. it's the pleco that won't bother other fish. however just make sure that the pleco don't get too big till he can eat small fish

Oh~boy, I'm having bad internet connection hope I can send this thru

Neons (any tetras actually) would be fine with the pleco but they need an established tank. They can't handle the cycling process. Other tetras are more hardy (cardinals look very similar to neons and are better for a new tank).

Thanks peeps, youre all very helpfull, but i have another question lol - our tank has been cycling for about a week now, so how much longer should we give it before we put the tetras & betta in? Thank again all :hyper:
