Hey everybody, I got my new brackish tank up and running and it sure is a beauty. However, i have my green spotted puffer and I want to give him some snails to munch on but I can't find any of my LFS that sell a brackish snail. What kind do you guys give them? Maybe I can get them online? Thanks for the help

Nobody knows what kind of snails they feed their puffers? Every where I check says that they feed snails but I've yet to find a place that says what kind, any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

ANy type should do if your feeding them to the puffer
Pond snails or ramshorn are pretty good as their shells are relatively soft. Its adviced to miss out malyan trumpet snails (ice cream cone like ones) as their shells are substantially hard, and may damage the puffers beak.
Netrite snails do well in brackish, if you want a type to live long term.
Just ask for some pest snails but specifically say "excpet the trumpets!" :good:

Ramshorns snails is what my Puffers get.

Hey thanks guys, are ramshorns specifically brackish? Just wondering because it seems like not only are brackish species somewhat limited in regards to fish but also gastropods.

No Ramshorns are freshwater snails, so you need to remove any leftovers once the Puffers have eaten

Feed them any kind oif snail. There will be no point in getting specifically brackish ones, the GSPS will find them and eat them quite quickly anyway,.

It hasn't worked so far with the few I put in there, I was hoping he would learn by seeing one move around for a bit...although I guess breaking it open with a hammer would suffice I just like the idea of seeing him learn on his own. Also, what would you guys do for a brackish algae eater? Obviously snails are out of the question, and I heard some pleco's can make the trip over to brackish but that sounded sketchy. Also, don't think i'm a total noob I read the stickied forums just wondering what else you guys got outside of a protein skimmer. Thanks guys

Hi

My Puffer likes to nibble on shells I have collected from the beach when on holiday. I just boil them and stick them in the tank. I think you can buy them as well. I had my GSP about 2 years now and I never had trouble with his teeth.
Regarding algae you just have to learn to live with it. I have a protein skimmer on my tank and I still have to scrape the algae of. That’s the way it is. Please correct me if I am wrong but I am certain that there isn’t a pleco for Brackish.

My understanding is that hypostomus plecostomus, what used to be the common pleco, tolerated only very lightly brackish water, other than that, there are no plecos whatsoever.

My goby eats some algae off the glass, as do my monos. It's not really enough to make a difference though, although mollies are supposed to be decent enough for it if you have the right tank, but like Sabby says, bit of elbow grease works best.

Both nerites and Malaysian trumpet snails are fine in lightly brackish water, but puffers eat snails so quickly that it won't be an issue making sure your tank has the proper salinity - the snail will die of the puffer attack before it dies of the shock.

Also, I hope you aren't buying the giant ramshorn snails - the "break their shells with a hammer thing" worried me, as you can easily break the shells of the pest ramshorns with your fingertips.

I haven't bought any ramshorns so no. I fed my puffer some shrimp that I cut up last night and he really enjoyed that, and I'm learning to only feed him when he "asks" for food, because a few times I've given him food but he just looks at it like "/shrug" he's a fun fish and I cant wait to get my gobies and mudskippers tomorrow
