My midas, like many cichlids, loves to dig. Recently he re-arranged the tank so that there's a wall of sand piled up against the front of the tank and it's hard to see in. Today I decided to fix this, and leveled out the sand... That is the maddest fish I have EVER seen!!
He was flaring and was ready to bite the fire out of my hand if I hadn't shooed him away. He never ever does this when I'm doing water changes, but he did NOT want me to touch his creation. I guess maybe next time I should just trust his aquascaping skills :p

aww,hes just learning how to be a bad ass now :flex:

Awww... he made a sand castle for you!
lol

Take a picture next time - I'd love to see it! heh
I wish I had a picture of what the tank used to look like... he made a really cool looking landscape at one point by piling the sand against the back wall and making some hills

Edit: Awesome, I found a pic! Before midas:

After midas:

Haha... he's already at work putting it back to the way it was
It'll probably be back to having a hill in the front within two days.

Dang!
Does he just shove it around with his nose or what?

Would'nt you just crap if you ever came in and saw that he had scratched the word "MIDAS" into the sand?

imo, it looks better in the 2nd picture
Haha, I agree! That's why I left it that way

BettaMomma: He scoops the sand up in his mouth and moves it. Sometimes he gets too much and coughs and it comes pouring out his gills! *lol*

What a goobernut!
I've seen those little lawnmower blennys do that.
I didn't think that any fish like yours did that.

lol

He's one of a kind!!

that's fun watching them do landscaping. i tried to get a pic of one of my parrots digging after i rearranged the tank, but it didn't turn out worth a crap

I moved all the sand away from my filter intake one day to keep it from getting in, put gravel in the corner about one foot radius about the corner and he(maylandia lombardoi) had covered all th gravel up in sand the next day today I moved the sand he put on to the other side of the tank where theres another male to guard it (not really guard it just pile it up against the glass gguess he doesn't want he sand in his cave either) so he can't put it back but he was mad at me, Though I think for the most part cichlids have good aquascapeing skills, but ther not practical. If i was a fish I wouldn't spit sand into my filter

Ahhhhh, HOW CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently changed the substrate in my 50 to 3/4 sand and I kept about a 1/4 of my large gravel for looks. Well my largest BP seems to prefer the gravel because he has combed through most of the tank picking up the gravel and bringing them over to his and his "hunny's" love boat where they have been practicing to have babies!!!!

It was soooooo cute. I had to destroy his romantic "gravel bed" when I siphoned last though.........

What sweeties!!!!!!!!

don't the males make nests for the females. isn't that what they are doing when they aquascape. I don't own cichlids so don't listen to me. That might be why midas got so angry though. just a thought
