Can anyone please help me? I asked for help under the oddball section and din`t get a single response!
I have a Tire Track Eel which has suddenly got a big red growth on its tail. It looks like an ulcer but feels hard and is bright red.
He was in with an elephant nose so we moved him out of there and in with the dragon gobies and treat the tank with Paragon. It hasn`t worked at all, i am worried it might be atumor.
This has never happened to any of my fish before and he is far too active, not normal for him so not a good sign.
He only eats when the lights are out so it`s hard to see but he doesn`t seem interested in food.

Please can anyone give me some advice. I know he can`t be treat with the elephant nose that`s why we moved him but i fear we will lose him if we don`t find the right treatment.
PLEASE HELP!

Out of all you people on this forum can nobody help me at all? My Tire Track Eel is dying. Please, someone must of had a similar problem with one of their fish at sometime!

Hi Clare I know Bugger-all about your problem except I purchased an eel for my brothers tank years ago and it didn't last very long. Try researching your eel on the net and repost this with a red exclamation mark and caps on the title someone else might notice that knows more than yours truly!

Thankyou at least for responding to my post. I have no idea what this growth is but i fear it may be a tumor. He is very ill and not eating, i think his chances are slim which breaks my heart as he is such a lovely character (as you will know from yours). I am going to get some advice from a well trusted store today and we think we will try Melafix which is for growths.
I will let you know, good or bad his progress so keep checking the post.
Thanks for caring.

Not really like any of the ones on that site. He is very very ill now and i will be surprised if he lasts more than a day or so.
The blister looking thing on his tail is bright red and he is laid on his side gasping a lot. His stomach looks distended, like it has spread to his insides. I think this may be a tumor or something, i think it is more than a simple bacterial infection.
Thankyou for your help, i will let you know the outcome of this. Today we treat the tank with Myxazin and put a drop or two actually on the tail.
We rang Waterlife who make the treatment and they said it would be okay to use with Paragon. It only causes a problem if you use the two within 48 hours as they counterbalance eachother, then neither work but they don`t poison the tank.
A very sad time for us.

Today Lawrence is still the same although he does seem to be holding his head up a bit more in true eel fashion. The Myxazin takes a while to start working enough to see a difference anyway, we have to treat him every day for 5 days. It`s so sad to see him laid at the side of the pot, sometimes he`s on his side too.
I just keep monitoring him and trying to keep the feeding pattern the same in hope he`ll eat something.
I`ll keep you posted anyway.

Firstly,
Thankyou to you all for your help with this one.
Sadly he is getting weaker all the time, he lays upside down for a while before he manages to right himself and move somewhere else. Still not eating.
Like i said, we are still trying with the Myxazin and this is day 3, the growth looks to be going white a bit but is huge.
Sometimes i can`t help but feel this is such a cruel world where this poor little creature is being killed slowly by this awful infestation of disease and there is really not much we can do. We all hope these medications will work and i know there are a lot of good products on the market but at the end of the day, diagnosis is difficult and there are only general treatments out there.
I keep trying for poor Lawrence and hoping for a miracle but every time i look in the tank my heart sinks as i expect the worst. Where there is still life there is always hope as far as i am concerned and i will not give up on him.
Seeing as though nobody else has ever had this condition with a fish i want to tell people all i can about it in hope that i can help others in the future so i will keep posting.

Hello clare :)

It is a great change to see someone like you telling people about this new growth rather than asking for help and then leaving without saying thankyou, you sound like you care deeply for this eel and i can understand this.. i wish you the absolute best luck with him

Thanks nutter,
I do care for him a lot and it can be difficult to basically tell everyone he is dying. On the other hand i really appreciate evryones help, advice and care and i wouldn`t dream of not thanking you all or telling you the outcome.

There isn`t nearly enough research into fish diseases as they are considered not worth spending the money researching cures for when they can easily be replaced if they die, like a lot of small animals. I thought that was what the forum was for, to help eachother, and everyone can learn something new no matter how long they have kept fish.
Much appreciated
a very sad Clare

I am very sad to say, that we lost Lawrence, our Tire Track Eel today. He went through the so called `death throws` where he was going into spasms near the top of the tank then falling to the bottom but within a few minutes his suffering was over.
I have no idea what this terrible growth was, but i am certain it is what killed him. It appeared over night, literally but he went off his food a day or so before.
A sad end for what was a beautiful fish who had grown so much since we got him.
All these creatures have a little place in our hearts.
