I have a tank with 7 guppies, 4 neon tetras and 2 shrimps. The tetras I have had for 3 years, the guppies were bred here, and are around 3 years old, the shrimps are at least 3 years now. I don’t have real plants, the water is part changed every 10 days, and all has been well for years. A couple of months ago, I noticed a dark coloured growth on the side of one of the neon tetras which has now grown to quite a size. I have trawled through the internet, but I’m unable to find anything which looks remotely like my problem. All of the fish in the original tank are perfectly healthy Because I was not certain if the growth was fungal, or a tumour, I have isolated the fish into a heated and filtered tank, alongside the main tank, so that the tetra doesn’t feel too isolated. As the pictures show, he hasn’t lost any colour. The fish is still eating, and swimming normally, so I’m completely baffled. I don’t think its a fungal infection now, but if it was a tumour, I don’t see how he could swim upright! Can anyone help at all?

Hi, welcome!
I can't identify what's wrong with your tetra. I'm sorry, hang in there someone will surely pick this up soon...
Great that you isolated the fish, and they are lucky to have you taking care of them.
Three years!

Looks like a tumor. In that case, not much that can be done. Just let him live out his life as long as he’s comfortable. Colin_T may have more to add. Hope all works out. :)

That sounds like something I would do too, poor fella. Good on you for reaching out, can be frustrating not finding answers through personal research.

Thanks. That’s what I thought...looking at him last night, he is leaning a little now. However, I’ll keep him comfy as long as I can.

Thanks. I think it’s a tumour...he’s still happy at the moment, eating and swimming about albeit with a little lean to the side now, so I’ll just leave him be.

got a picture that isn't blue?

how long has it had the growth?
how long have you had the fish for?
have you added anything to the tank in the 2 weeks before this started?

the fish is a cardinal tetra, they have the red line the full length along their body. neons have a half length red line and silver belly :)

I’ve taken another 2 pics a little closer in. The blue hue I’m stuck with sorry.
ive been aware of the growth for a couple of months now but he could have had it longer...I isolated him around 3 weeks ago.
I should have realised it was a cardinal tetra which actually means I’ve had him more than 3 years. I will have had him for around 4 years now. I remember him particularly because when I bought the tetras from the pet shop, all the others were neons which I’d asked for.
Nothing alien was added to the tank apart from the usual water safe and safe bacteria with the water changes...all the same products I have always used. Tetra Safe start.

I should add...the tank isn’t blue when lit...it’s just a strip led light with white and blue lights. I can’t get a picture any clearer I’m afraid
