Hey All.

I am a newbie fish keeper. I currently have a 115 litre tank which has 9 fish in. I have Neon Blue tetra's a Barb and a rummy nosed tetra.
I looking forward to find lots of info and can not wait to expand my aquarium!

Bye,

Gee

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

You have room for more fish, and barbs and tetras like to be in bigger groups. How often do you do your water changes, how big are they, and what are your water parameters?

+1

We're fish addicts here; we love as much detail as possible!

:hi: I just joined the forums too and it is great! I'm sure you'll have a great time. :D It would be great to see some pics of your setup.

Thanks for all your replys!

I have had my fishies since Thursday so have not yet done a water change. How much would you advise to change at a time and how often?
And water parameters . . . I really need to go shopping soon and get some tests. Might get some more fish aswell.

Oh, i just have a quick queerie. My fish - especially the barb - Keep seeing themselves in the reflection on the side of the tanks.
They sort of move around with their noses to the glass. Is this behaviour okay?

Hehe. Reading lots of posts on here I dont understand half of what your talking about!
Im gunna need to do some more research!

Make sure to buy a liqued test kit. The API Master Freshwater kit is one of the best ones out there. It is also really inexpensive compared to others. Also, did you cycle the tank? I would advice against adding more fish now because the bacteria need to catch up on the current bio-load. You want to do a 20% water change weekly or when needed. After you have had your tank set-up for a while you will understand your tanks schedule for when it needs a water change and how often. It all depends on your bio-load.
So more fish = more water changes
Less fish = less water changes

Ex. When ammonia or nitrites get out of hand. You also want to keep your nitrates in-between 10-20ppm. If it gets any higher then 20ppm do a small water change to stable it out.

I hope this helped you out :D

First thing to do is get that liquid test kit. Salifert is probably the very best, followed by Nutrafin then API. Whichever one you get, test the water right away and post the results here. Then we can help you determine how your tank is doing!

Okay, So I haven't cycled the tank, and read all about it last night, but I got my tank and filter second hand from a friend who was giving it away, so will there still be good bacteria in there?
Thanks for the help you all seem so friendly here :D I will get the liquid test as soon as possible! :good:

If the filter has been left running and in water, yes some bacteria may have survived; if it's been switched off, washed in tap water, or allowed to dry out, then no, there won't be any left.

It has been dried out - so will my fish be okay?
There has been no problems yet, and my filter has been going for 4 days. . .

Unless you have an ammonia test, there's no way of knowing. You'll have to keep a very, very close eye on your fish's behaviour, until you can get a test, and be prepared to do a large (50 or 60%) water change anytime you see anything that looks untoward.

I'd do a 25 or 30% change every day, to be on the safe side.

Okay! So The results of my water test:

Ph: 7.6

Carbonate Hardness:6 d

General hardness: >14 d

Nitrite: 0

Nitrate 100

How often should you do these tests?

On a bad note - I one think of my neon tetra's has fin rot. . .
On my shopping trip today I purchased some Myxazin and tonic salt.
Im not sure whether to put these in at the same time or one after another?

I will try and upload some pics soon. Is there a thread showing me how to attach them?

thanks!
Gee
