The water in my tank has gone slightly green for some reason, I did a 40% water change 4 days ago yet the water is still green, I've cleaned my pump out as the filter was clogged up a bit and I've also ordered a new pump, can't remember whether it was 150 litres per hour or gallons per hour but the one I have at the minute is a 60 litre or gallons per hour

could somebody tell me how to get rid of the green, I've cleaned my ornaments and plants and also intentionally left a few plants out I've also been advised by a friend to change a couple of pints of water every day...is this right???

Not sure exactly why your water is green. It could be an algae build up. Do you have light on for exccessive periods of time? In the meantime I would do a 15-20% water change daily.

I had this same problem. I turned my lighting off for a day and limited its use and it went away. Also water changes weekly. I found this short summary of "Green Water" as they call it. Check it out:

Green water: A true unicellular algae. Also tends to show up during the earlier setup stages of a planted aquarium. Also called "green-water", it is a bloom that occurs quickly and takes over the aquarium. Cannot be easily controlled with water changes, you must reduce the source of micro nutrients that tends to feed the bloom for long term low-tech control. For immediate impact, try UV sterilizers that prevent the bloom in the first place (keep in mind, UV sterilizers will also oxidize trace elements in the water and render them unusable to plants). Micron filter cartridges or diatom filters can also remove the immediate haze. An excellent quick solution to your green water woes is Barley straw extract. We can attest to the fact it eliminates green water in just 2 days.

BTW is caused by Diatoms. Her is what they look like:

I sort mine my keeping the tank light off for 2 days.Try and hire a diatom filter.Hard to find in the uk though-i'm in Plymouth and most LFS have not even heard of them.

personally, i went with an internal uv sterilizer. it will ship and arrive this week hopefully.

Could you elaborate please...I have a GW prob which I sort by lighting restrictiions but your option would seem preferable.
