I am currently in the process of setting a nano reef. I bought some live rock the other day as a way to start cycling my tank.

2 of the pieces I bought had a hithchiher green striped mushroom (aka. disc anemone) each on them (I really like their colouring! :) ). The live rock was brought home damp rather than sub-merged in saltwater. I did not think about if they would survive of not as I was too excited about getting the live rock! (idiot!)

The green mushrooms both have shrivelled up even though I have placed the rocks in good flow and lighting. As the tank is currently cycling, the ammonia/nitrite levels will be high so I'm assuming this along with being brought home in in a bag without water along with not being acclimatised properly may have caused them to die which is the reason they have shrivelled up and not opening?? They sill are stuck onto the rock though if this means anything?? ????

However 2 other pieces of live rock also bought from the same shop and brought home in the same fashion seem to have red mushrooms on them that are alive and open so survived the journey so far! So how can it be that these other mushrooms seem to be fine whereas the green striped ones look dead?

So waht do you think... are the green mushrooms dead? If so then do they ever re-grow after the tank has stopped cycling and is stable or is this the end of them...? :rip:

Any thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

Cheerz

i doubt they will die, i had a brown mushroom hitchhiker on my live rock, it spent about 3 hours out of water, went through a cycling stage, was shoved in the sand bed (i didnt see it until i re-aquascaped) for about 24 hours, and it was only half an inch and it opened after a few days. Grew to about an inch and a half, died in a tank crash (no idea why, it was so hardy from before only to die in a tank crash where most of my lps corals survived, only god knows)

Cheerz Musho, :good:

So you wreckon they will survive then? Really hope so as the colour is oustanding and they came free from the rock and I dont really want to be going out to buy any more!

yes they should hopefully survive, maybe a few of them will die or they shrink and dont look so healthy, they shouldnt fully die and never come back.

Mushrooms in general prefer lower flow areas, and if they are shrivelling this maybe why. other than that they are fairly indestructible :D

Thanks for that, its something thats never crossed my mind, iv actually placed the mushrooms in direct water flow as i thought it may help restore them?!!! I will sort this out first thing in the morning and let you know how they get on!!

Yeah, actinodiscus species mushrooms prefer low-flow as mentioned. I also agree with musho. Those things are TOUGH to kill :)

You were all right, I took my closed mushrooms off the rock in the high level of flow and moved them to the sandbed a few days ago and guess what, they are starting to open up! :yahoo:

Thanks everybody :thanks:

see, nothing to worry about lol.... Pretty soon they may even become space stealing weeds....

Hehe, depends... Some tanks they grow like weeds, others they grow slow-like.
