hi peeps

seems like a very basic question especially for a tank thats been set up for over a year, but when I changed the gravel about 3 months ago I took out a layer of about 5cm(gravel) and replaced it with only 2cm worth as I origanally thought 5cm was far to much...but is that enough. before when I did a gravel vac i had to literally dig deep to get everything and now even a light dusting leave gaps... also its really hard to get plants(fake) to sit right...

should I get more gravel or im a being over sensitive, do they need gravel/sand or are smooth glass stones/pebbles ok???

any advice would be great.

thank you and kiss kiss

What fish do you have your tank Godzuki?

Gee

2 sharks(not for long) 3 black widows 2 mickies 1 loach 5 tetras (different breeds not sure which) 1 neon and 1 swordtail.

21 gallons tank

Hi,

An inch of gravel should be enough to hold down plants. If you have the kind of plastic plants that have an oval dish base you could always silicon some gravel to the base so the plant won't float. You would have to use aquarium safe silicon form your fish shop.

i just stuck a ruler in the tank and its just over half a inch. so you think I need some more gravel in?
thanks again

What type of filter do you have? (Tanks with undergravel filters require deeper gravel)

I usually have about 2ins which is the amount you had previously, I would add a little more to make it at least an inch, (more if you do have an UG filter).

I think the general rule for gravel is 1lb per gallon. My gravel is at about an inch in some tanks, a little more in others and tanks with sand are under an inch.
