why do you need and air pump gravel vac. whouldn't just a normal gravel vac do?

Got the normal gravel vac but the tank is heavily planted and I can't get the normal vac into some spots so I was thinking of making an airpowered one from an old sponge filter then I can vacuum the tank whenever I please an not have to remove water from the tank (cept 4 weekly 25% I change). Just looking for detailed pics so that I can make summin
