Hello all. Since my new 3gal tank has arrived, I want to start the fishless cycle and at the same time add some beneficial gravel for the new bacterial colonies to grow on. What type of gravel is most widely used among us Betta owners? Any gravel established as "standard fare"? And for aesthetics sake just some nice natural looking gravel is fine. I have come across some of the following as well:

1. Kordon Wonder Rock - Beach Pebbles

2. Another type of Wonder Rock - Beach Pebbles but cheaper than #1

3. Estes Natural Aggregates

4. Top Fin Aquarium Gravel

Are any of these any good? The Kordon brand ones specifically state they are epoxy coated, not sure if this is beneficial / necessary or not -- but I thought I read somewhere that epoxy coated gravel can cloud up the water for a while after it is new.

The other types of gravel don't state if they are treated or untreated, just plain rock, etc. I do like the pebble type ones because in the pictures they seem smoother as opposed to other gravel i've seen. Don't want to go with sand either.

Also not sure why #2 and #1 are priced differently.. they both seem to be pebble based and pretty much the same color, 5lb bags.

Any advice on anything would be greatly appreciated! I don't mean to be so nit-picky about gravel but I want to do things the right way for my boy Trevor :)

It really doesn't matter. Its entirely up to you. Smooth is better as rough ones can rip their fins up, but other than that, as I said, its your choice.

Sounds good.. I'd just as soon go with a natural pebble.

Anyone heard anything for/against the epoxy coated ones specifically?
