Gravel Or Sand?

I have recently posted a topic about stocking my 60L tank, however my friend has just offered me his 30L tank,
now as my 60L has gravel and is going through a fishless cycle, I am planning to take the 30L and maybe start cycling however with sand? just for a group of cardinals or glow lights and some shrimp.
 
Is Sand a good idea?

i love the use of sand, i know im never going back to gravel, but its all down to personal preference

hmm okay, I guess I will try some black coloured sand or thin substrate. thanks for the help
