Gourami Gender

They just spawned!!!!!!! I have taken the female out now because they wrapped about 7 times from what I saw and they did a few before hand. When should I take the male out?

When they press their sides together and wrap their tails around they are mating. The female will expel eggs and the males release sperm when they do the wrapping bit.

You normally leave the female in with the male until he chases her away. That way you know she has expelled all her eggs.

The male stays in the tank until the babies are free swimming. He looks after the nest and eggs and babies during the first 2 weeks of their life.

wait until you see the babies swimming around and feeding, then you can remove him. It will be in a couple of weeks.

Hi Schmellman and welcome to the forum :)

you are allowed to post nice comments on this thread and other threads :)

The fish in the pictures are male Honey Dwarf Gouramis and are not readily seen in shops, but they do make wonderful pets and are usually hardy. The main reason they aren't very common is because they are a dull silver grey colour until the males mature at about 12 months old. Then the males colour up and people are amazed at the new colours :)

Thanks Schmellman for the comments of my honey gouramis! If your interested I can send you a video of them spawning! Also if you would like some of the fry when they are grown, because I might have more then I know what to do with! I am gonna give some to fish shops because as Colin said they are not widely sold. If you live in the UK then I could help you with a few if enough make it to adulthood!

You will need to have food ready for the fry once they are free swimming, and now is the time to start getting that ready. The fry also need a tight lid to make sure the air above the water is warm and humid.
See the Reproduction section here http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/trichogaster-chuna/

The father will suck up any eggs or non-free swimming fry that fall out of the bubble nest and spit them back in the bubbles. But once they become free swimming he will see the fry as food which is why you need to remove him at that point.

a quick and simple food for baby fish is boiled egg yolk. Boil an egg for 10 minutes and then remove the shell and the white bit. Put the yellow yolk into a handkerchief and squeeze it through the handkerchief into a small container of water. Put a lid on the container and shake it up.

When the babies start swimming about, you shake the egg yolk mix up and use an eye dropper to suck it out and squirt it around the tank near the fry.
You can also buy liquid fry foods that are a similar thing and you add a few drops to a small amount of water, shake well and add to the tank.
