Hi Guys. Just bought a 300 litre tank on ebay. The tank has holes drilled for a sump system. Is this tank big enough for marine in your opinion and how many fish would I be able to fit in this tank.

thank you in advance

Rob

Technically any tank is big enough to use for marine, the smaller ones are just sometimes difficult for beginners :). What are the tank's dimensions?

It's kind of hard to say how many fish you can "fit" in a marine tank. There are a lot more variables involved than there are with a fresh water tank.

A 300l tank is just under 80US gallons. The general rule is about 1" of fish per 2 or 3 gallons of water. But it all depends on a variety of factors including the footprint of the tank, the type of fish you want to keep in it, how much LR you going to have etc etc

never follow a rule that uses inches and gallons, ever......

Just remember that, the less fish body mass, the easier it is to keep the water quality stable. But you may feel like the tank is lacking something if you only have one small fish for a 75 gallon tank.....

Tell us your plans for this tank, choosing fish is one of the last things to plan.

accordin to LFS not many. i got a 120 liter tank and they said i can keep 3 fish at the most. bollox to that i have seen tanks half the size with over 10 fish. and apparently my tank is so small they wont give me guarantee on any fish i buy either... not even on frags so i dunno what there excuse is for that. i changed shops now and they said i can have as many as i want.. just the more fish the more food waste, water pollution etc so i think 5 or 6 will be fine for my tank.. so you could have 10-15 depending on how big they get and what filter system etc u have. if u do weekly checks u shud be fine and if u do over stock ur know it within a week when u check ur water parameters.
i think the LFS forgets they got tiny tanks with 5-10 fish in sometimes for months on end.. if its so bad why are they selling us them same fish ?

They won't guarantee because your tank is too small? That's BS my friend... any other pet stores in your area? MAybe walk in and say you just set up a 100 gallon with mature live rock and sand? :hey:

And I agree... the original poster could easily have ten to fifteen small fish in a 300L tank.

yup they said they guarantee nothing wich is going in a tank under 200 liters because its to small to be a marine tank. maybe they never heard of nano reefs lol. i dont go there any more wich sucks because they have alot to choose from, but a new shop is opening and stocking coral next week so hopefully they will get alot more diffrent species of fish too

lol they only guarantee it for 24 hours wich is ####e really, iv never had a fish die on me within 24 hours and i have kept all sorts before

I used to have this huge cobalt cichlid...had a lot of fish die in 24 hours trying to find him some buddies...he was pretty rude to say the least :p

thank you for all your posts guys. just picked up the tank today, and it has a massive sump system (88 litres).
Is just live rock better or coral & live rock? Is sand better for substrate... can I use rough sand that I have in my tropical setup?

thank u in advance
