Yesterday I got 6 platies from lfs on closer inspection it look like I only have one female but could be wrong. If it is the case how likely is it to have some babies swimming around shortly?

It wont be long unless the males kill her by harassing her constantly. 1 female and 5 males is a recipe for disaster. It should be 1 male and 2 or 3 females. I find platies can take upto 5 weeks to have fry.

Agree with Ny - you need to swap some of those males for females and once they are mature they will produce fry every 4-5 weeks. It takes a really bad tank for them not to breed! However if you don't want to be inundated with fry every month you could swap the female for another male then obviously you won't get any breeding at all if you have sexed them correctly.

I have 2 males and 5 females and I'm overrun with fry, I wouldn't recommend that unless you have breeding tanks ready! :p

To answer your question, the female is very likely to be pregnant.  If the males are not harassing her then she is almost definitely pregnant.  When she is close to giving birth they will start to show an interest in her which could be very stressful for her.

I have a 50 gallon lightly planted tank wit h a bunch of rocks to accomodate my 4 cat fish. I have about 18 platies in there to which no fry ever survive.

My 29 gallon moderately planted tank (specifically noting JAVA MOSS) usually produced 6 fry that survive every month if I decide to catch them out of the java moss and place them into my filtered breeder.

I would definitely correct your ratio of male to female.

I have 8 females and 2 males and the males constantky harassed one female to the point I had to remove the males to the larger tank....it stressed me out watching the poor thing day in and day outm

Lucky you :)

You should have a ratio of 1 male to every 3 females, to stop the males harassing the females.
The female is most probably pregnant, but it depends on how far or long she is as when you will have fry, they are pregnant for around 4 or 5 weeks.
The more females you have the more fry you will have! But be careful not to be overrun with them, and try to get a separate tank for the fry to grow in, because the adults are likely to eat them.
Good luck!

Alternatively, do what Lolo does and let nature take its course.
