$8 a pound is way overpriced. Anything over $10 has got to be urban legend. I can't believe a store is charging that. Have you double-checked? Or found another store?

In any case, there are folks in Nashville and Chatanooga for sure (if you are in E. Tenn) and certainly Atlanta, who will sell live rock for a fraction of the $4 even ... if you look. It's worth it.

The online sources are numerous and along the prices others have posted.

If you are to follow Supermans advice, and you can, get only liverock that has been cured in a local shop.

If you buy liverock online and have it shipped, the die off of some of the life will cycle your tank for you without any fish added. this is the way I would do it. Then I would get crabs and snails and pods and stars and shrimp. Then I would add the fish I liked most.

The second route allows for the maturation of a sustainable food chain.
