got convicts!!

went to pet store where i used to live... as i was there for weekend....
they had deal... buy 1 fish get 2 free....
convicts price said $7.99
so i bought 3.... 1 male 2 females....
I ONLY GOT CHARGED $2.50
which was awesome.... but when i got back to friends house i realized girl gave me all females... so i had 3 females... well.... i need males... and they breed in pairs... so i went and got 3 more.... so right now i have 3 pairs of convicts in my 10 gallon tank..... my friend is gettign another tank and i told him not to put anything in it so he can have some of my convict babies.... right now the convicts are small... as they grow its going to become increasingly tight in the 10 gallon... got 3 spots in tank for the 3 pairs.... 1 on each side and 1 in the middle... hopefully once they pair up they will stay to their parts and behave .. eep

Nope, they won't.

I have a 40 gallon and have 1 pair.

I BARELY kept two pairs in it before but i had lots of little battles in the middle of the tank. I made it work, but i had to place barriers in the middle of the tank. I basically split the tank in two with tall thick plants. I didn't want to go through that little war again so i will only let myself keep 1 pair in this tank

3 pairs in a 10-gallon will not work. Nor will 2 pairs. Hell, 10 gallons is a bit on the small side for 1 pair. Should use 20 gallon Long for 1 pair.

you are going to end up with dead fish... 10 gallons is too small for one breeding pair there is no way it will work for three... The smallest id try 1 pair in would be a 20 long or bigger.. take some of them back or dont cry about it when they all end up dead..

If im not mistaken you were warned about tank size requirements before and told it wouldnt work..

it will work..... just wait...... i can easily split the tank up if i need to... right now they are small... about 1 inch each... they jus swim around and chill.... worse comes to worse ill have to give 2 to my friend.... they seem fine now and if they get bigger ill trade em in at the pet store.... i love it when people get angry and try to give lectures on forum...

Convicts are aggressive fish that grow to 6" long, and not even one has any business being in a 10 gallon tank. You know a true fish lover when they couldn't give a hoot about the well being of the fish, way to go buddy

Nick, 20 gallon long (30" long) is the absolute minimum I would a single pair in, and this is without tankmates. With tankmates I wouldn't go with anything less then a 55 gallon, 4 foot tank. But I also like to provide my fish with the space to act naturally and grow properly.

Hope you have better luck than me.

My female just killed the 3rd male i tried giving her. They were getting along fine til last night. I came home and she was chasing him all around the tank. Poor fish was panting like crazy and slightly injured. I had to take him out and he was dead this morning.

Looking for bachelor #4 now.

From my expeirence, out of the hundreds of convicts i have raised, they are all cute and playful and nice at 1" long. You can put them with neons and they will get along fine. It's when they get 2" or bigger that they turn into evil fish.

Yup, that's standard with most aggressive cichlids. Beginners tend think they've accomplished the impossible, not realizing that adult aggression is a completely different animal.

I've met beginners that actually think Convicts max out at about 3" long, not realizing that this is only because they're keeping them in such tiny tanks. So many convicts, and cichlids in general, are bought by people like this and never do live to see adult sizes

Yes its too bad there are so many childish and inmature people that think because they own a tank they know more then people that have had these fish for years.
And those are usually the same people that show back up later crying about losing fish and asking what went wrong and why.

ok..... here is what i have done so far...

right now... 1 10 gallon has the 2 smaller pairs in it... ill post a pic soon once my new computer/internet is up and runnin (about 5 days)

the 10 gallon with 2 pairs has a huge skull, a holy rock formation, 1 piece of upright slate surrounded by 2 plants, and a turned over wagon... thats 4 places for mating to the 2 pairs of convicts.... that should give them enough room not to fight too much considering theyll both have 2 cave like places to breed in each..

i put the biggest male and biggest female into their own 10 gallon, and moved the about 15 tetras in my 20 gallon with my 15 other guppies... in that 10 gallon i have 2 pipes on their side and a driftwood piece with fake plants coming out of it.... hopefully that will work out better than the 3 pairs in 1 10 gallon, and hopefully wont be as traumatic to some members of the TFF..
