I just now got it cleaned my question is if I took all my cycled water and filters off from my 20 gallon (long) and put it in the 55 gallon and filled it on up with water would it be ok to add the fish in the same day because if I drained my 20 gallon I wouldnt have anywhere to put them at the moment

and I forgot to mention that I got it for $15.00 at a yard sale the lady had been keeping a jack demespy in it and she gave the fish to her son

If you transfer the whole of the 20 gallon, including gravel, ornaments, filter, water and anything else in it, you should be ok in adding the fish also. It's a bit like doing a really large water change. Don't add any new fish until the tank settles, and you may get a mini nitrite spike (I did when I transferred a smaller tank to a larger one) but it should only last a day or so and it wasn't very noticable (0.25 - or less - didn't even reach the 2nd colour on my scale - just somewhere inbetween 1st and 2nd) Good luck on the transfer :)

thanks for the reply gadozobe I was think that would be like I was making a big water change butI really wanted to check before I done anything if you know what I mean. I just dont know what to put in my other 55 gallon tank now doyou have any ideals

Great find, fish keeper sharks and mollies. What a heck of a deal! :)

As far as what you could put in the other one, not sure what type of fish you're looking for, and I'm going to assume it isn't a cichlid. I would get about 15 tiger barbs, a red tail black shark, and few cherry barbs. :D

I have a 55 gallon already set up with baby cichlids in it already I feel in love with them babies and had to have them you know how that goes. How does this sound about six bala sharks and another redtail shark and a pleco I was thinking about some loaches I dont like the barbs at all.

The redtail would work but I wouldn't get the Bala's. They grow to about 16".

I would think the loaches would go good with the rtbs, but have never tried them together but don't think the rtbs would bother them.

We have to get you some mid and upper level swimmers also. Danios or gouramis maybe?

   :D :D :D :D hey smb are they any friendly cichlids that can be kept with community fish if so can you tell me what they are and a page to mabey I can look at them. I just love cichlids but wouldnt the be so cute with some other kind of fish besides thier own kind?

There sure are many types of cichlids that are nice. The main thing is it can be hit or miss if they get along with non-cichlids. Among other cichlids even the tamest of them just seem to know how to handle themselves amongst their own, at least enough to get by.

Rams and kribs are nice fish and are small but I don't think I could recommend them for a community tank with 100% surety. If you asked me if it would work percentage-wise, I would say yes, but cichlids will be cichlids.

Thorichthys meeki (Firemouth) is usually ok in most community aquaria. There is no given rule ever per compatability when it comes to most fish and even less when it comes to cichlids.

Neetroplus nematopus (Neets) only get to about 3-4" but in all honesty, they are probably the baddest fish that ever lived per inch and aggro! Salvinis are a fish that only get to about 6" but I have had a few that have taken out fish almost twice their size on a regular basis.

Then you move up to the guapotes! Not too many other cichlids can handle these bad boys.

festae and beani's can but I don't know any others that can. They are as bad as it gets for their size and umbri's and dovii's are the head of that class bar none!

The point I'm trying to make is you just never know until you try as there is never any given rule when it comes to cichlids.

OK, I'm sorry for rambling on like this. I love cichlids and am so passionate about them and love talking about them so don't get me going unless you want a long post. :D

That's why I love cichlids so much and have had them for 27 years now!!! You never know what you're going to get with any of the thousand species and each fish is like a new trial because nothing is ever written in stone!

Edited: Upon rereading this, I have no idea why I went into that speel I just did. You never asked anything at all about the cichlid dominance and I went on a diatribe here?

I'm sorry. I could have sworn I saw some word up there that spelled cichlid tho and I just go haywire I guess when I get the chance and just hope that there will be somone somewhere out there that will just talk cichlids with me.

Hope you forgive me and just laugh at it and let it go as a momentary lapse of reason. :)

I was so excited for you I didn't even realize the question you were asking!

It all depends.

I use bleach to clean my tanks and if you did also then you need to wait a few days for it to dissipate.

So I guess the question is, what did you use to clean it? I hope it wasn't any soap. :p

I used aquarium salt I figured if they were any hidden parasites that the salt would take care of it I havent started filling it up yet tell me if I need to do anything else to it

If it's clean and to your satisfaction then there's nothing else to do since you only used aqua salt to clean it. :)

Fill it up and make sure the silicone holds up for 2-3 days, if you want to be cautious, and if you get no leaks then you're good to go. :D

they are just one small problem smb if I empty out my 20 gallon tank then I dont have anywhere to house my sharks and angel fish. What am I going to do with the fish until I get the new tank ready I was planning on using the water in the 20 gallon and filling the tank the rest of the way up it would be just like making a big water change for the little devils. Would you think they would be ok if I went ahead and put them in the 55 gallon as soon as I get it filled all the way up or not PLEASE help me out on this one I dont want to lose my fish
