I also got 3 8 UK gall tanks as well for my wife and two of the kids. Since i started revamping the old tank - the bug has bitten then as well! :p

My wife wants a puffer!

My son wants my Ruby Shark

My daughter likes the big fish - so she'll get what she's given when the tanks are ready to go! :p

One Question - fishless cycling - how does it work?

Bearing in mind the kids want some inhabitants asap - which type of cycling is best?

i don't think i'm the best person to ask about fishless cycling seen as i've never done it :*) , but i do know that since you have a tank already set up (i read your sig, i'm so clever :D ), you can take some of the substrate out of that and put it in the new tanks then some bacteria will already be in there to give the tank a boost

Could do that - only one problem..... My current tank uses sand, the new tanks will have gravel.

Y?

Only because i have just (about 4 weeks ago) taken the gravel out of my old tank and have it lying around!!

Will any of the bacteria still be alive in the gravel - its' been in a bucket outside?

I've just read Alien Annas pinned topic in the beginners forum, so no worries - I'm off to get some ammonia tommorow! :D

if your current tank is fully cycled you could hand a new filter sponge inside it for a few days then use one of the filter sponges (i'd use the old sponge) to seed your new tanks - cut it into 3 and if possible add to the filter housing with a full sponge or hang inside the tank.

the filter sponge from my old 7 gal was replaced with a new one (only have fry and a few neons in there so not a big bio load) and the old one inserted between the sponges of my new 50gal and it was instantly cycled - of course if you do that add a couple of fish striaght away.

if hanging sponge inside the tank use a bit of tights or stockings (which ever you or the wife prefer ;-) ) and remove after a week or so

careful monitoring of the water should show no ammonia nitrite etc

Thanks Andy, So......

Take the sponges from the new filters (there's only one in each of the Fluval 204), place them in my wifes Nora Batty Stocking ( ) in my current tank for a week or so, take the same type of filter from my current cannister filter, cut it into three, add that to the ones that i have been floating in the fulval 204s in the new tank, and hey presto, the new tanks should be cycled.

And add a few fish to the new tanks..... :fun:

I think that's right!

Thanks

if you have room to add three new sponges to your existing tank then i dont think you will need to add any other sponge to the new tanks

just let the new sponges 'soak up' bacteria for a week or so, then pop them into their cannisters in each of the new tanks and hey presto add fish and enjoy.
