ok i found a lil hairy beastie on a new bit of live rock i got this morning. looks like a gorilla crab. just wondering what harm they do to a tank?

thx DG

from what I have heard they are fairly aggressive towards snails, hermits, and fish. Don't know about coral. Most people remove them. If you have a sump throw it in there and it will benefit the tank to keep it, but not be able to inflict damage to anything in your display.

its just trying to find it again in my LR. went to catch it and it man off :(

i will get this wabbit hahahahaha

:D

ahhhh god damn it!! it got away again... anyone got any tips??

i cant isolate the rock as its got corals on :(

any help would be great!

thanks DG

im in the same boat as you. Ive got a crab loose somewhere and it hides in the peice of rock that is the bottom most one!!

i know it likes prawn, so i was going to bait it out with a prawn and catch it with tweezers (after lights out) but not got round to trying yet

i just tried that, got hold of its leg and i managed to wriggle out and dart back into the rock. i can see it.... just cant catch it. aslo saw another hitch hikker crab , i think its a red rock crab but not sure as its pretty small.will have to try and catch that aswell. if it get a thumbs up on the id i will pop it back in, if not into the sump it goes :p

thanks DG

Place a glass jar or drinking glass against your liverock, and place that bit of prawn/shrimp or other food in the bottum of it. Leave it overnight. When you wake, hopefully there should be a crab in the bottum who couldnt climb the glass to get back out. :good:

Your unlikely to catch it with twesers LOL. That would be comical to watch! The crab 1, DieGrinder 0

i am ashamed to say its crab 5 - die grinder 0 lol. humm will try that tonight. thx m8 :D

i had a quick go with twezers but ive only got some big plastic ones. the crab was having a go at them!!! but was just under the rock so couldnt get him. if i had some smaller metal ones i could get it easy.

yeah i was trying it for about 3 hours last night. didnt work. gonna try the glass/bait method for the next few nights, see what happens.

I've got a hairy crab roamin about too - from the sounds of it I wont even try to catch it!!!

Another method, which I dont really like, is stabing the crab. You use something long and sharpe like a skewer. You have to either go through the carapace or through its face with force. Mind your seals and glass. I dont like it much, and prefer the baiting methods.

humm stabbing it... well i will try baiting a few more times and if it fails i will stab it.

DG

awwww u cnt stab it thats just mean... :/

i dont want to stab it, i want to keep it in my refugium buut if its either that or spending loads on inverts then i am afraid its gonna be a crab kebab.
