Good Starting Fish?

Agreed, fish are very rarely the solution to any problem you have in your tank. If you want one of those fish, that's great, but if there is excess algae in the tank it's up to the keeper to do something about it.
 
Definitely go for the six platys as the first fish in the tank. Also, I notice you're DIYing CO2 injection. I wouldn't put any fish in the tank before you get that going and get the tank stable with it running.
 
By "an algea eater" I mean a catfish, or pleco. I've never seen them advertize like that, and I got the brisltenose it was an inch.
Why is it small?

No, of course not all tanks get algae, but some do. My BN cleans up waste from the bottom too.

IME most of the BN's ive seen grow to around 3-4 inches so yours is alright.
They CAN get to around 5 inches but in most cases around 3-4.
