good fish for stupidly hard water

What is the city? Most have public water quality reports. Many reports list the typical water harndness levels. I might be able to find it.

I've checked their report and hardness isn't included.

Hardness also maxes out the api master test (didn't get actual number, but main fish person at the store said it was typical of the area). All other parameters were normal (I got numbers, checked them against normal, and promptly lost the paper I wrote them on 🙄). Don't think water quality is the problem.

I also got API general cure at the person at the stores recommendation. Her comments and advice matched a lot of what I've read and been told here about the deaths likely being parasite related, so I figured it was worth a try. Started dosing today (along with a 50%water change). Hopefully this will work, though with the way things have been going I won't know for sure for about 2 months.

The API GH tester doesn't have a max. You add the drops one at a time until the colour changes. It's not like ammonia etc where there is a colour chart with a maximum level.

ok, fair. her words were something along the lines of "too hard to get a good reading, which is normal around here". (this might well mean she added drops too quickly or something. things like that happen in this kind of test).

at this point, though, it really doesn't seem like exact numbers are going to help, since the swordtails, who handle hard water, are dying while the plecos, who don't like it as much, are fine. i don't think the water parameters are why my fish are dying.

Or got fed up with adding drops while waiting for the colour to change.

No I agree, whichever is true (too hard for a good reading or just got fed up adding drops) it is very hard and shouldn't affect swordtails like this.
