OK WD, I confess. I am sometimes just slightly sarcastic when I see something like that being hyped as a way to know when your filter is exhausted.

I've been running tetra whisper filters on all my tanks for years and have had no problems. I use the sponge as a media and replace the filter cartridges when needed. I have never had an ammonia spike and have never had any problems. Seems that as long as you don't squeeze the sponge out, it collects enough bacteria to keep your tank cycled.
