Hello all.

I'm moving house soon, and the new place has a big back garden which is desperate for a Pond.

The Boss says that I can have a pond if I can convince her that kiddies won't fall in and that there is a low likelyhood of frogs. Therefore, I'm thinking of a big raised pond.

I want it to look good, and I have the space so I want to make it fairly "high tech", bottom drained, big ol' filtration system etc. However, I've done some reading on the net and it looks fairly complex. There seems to be a LOT of plumbing involved.

Can anyone reccommend a good book or some useful web sites that do a really clear step by stap on designing and building a pond? Especially about the various different filtration options and plumbing them all up?

Many thanks indeed.

Steve

I can't recommend any books, but if you are worried about kids falling into the pond, then you can get a custom made iron grating for the pond to prevent children from falling into it (i remember when i was a kid my mother had this sort of grating over her goldfish pond to prevent me falling into it when i was a child) if you'd prefer a pond dug into the ground. In my experience frogs generally tend to stay away from ponds with large fish in them like koi as koi will eat any frogs which are smaller enough to fit into their mouths and will also eat any tadpoles they find.

Go to my blog and click on the DIY Pond links on the right side and I have links to several FREE downloadable eBooks that give lots of good info on building your own pond as well as links to other good info for pond keepers. The main concern for most people is overwintering so you need to design your pond based on the winter climate in your area. A deep dug-in pond benefits from geothermal heating/cooling but above ground ponds do not share this benefit so these things need to be considered.
