I have 1 comet and 1 shubunkin in a 5 gallon tank (dont worry im upgrading to a 10) and whenever it comes time to feed them, the shubunkin always gobbles up all the food, leaving the comet hungry. I had my Comet on his own for a long time before I got my shubunkin, and hes always been an interesting eater. He never really did well going to the surface to eat. Id put flake food on the surface and hed do this wierd thing were hed swim up there, find a flake to eat, and pounce on it really fast and swim away as if the flakes where animals. So, id usually touch the flakes so they would float to the bottom, then hed eat them. Well, now the Shubunkin is eating EVERYTHING. Im afraid my Comet (who is bigger than my shubinkin) may be a hungry fish :(

cant you float some flakes in one corner for the shubunkin (sp?) and then in the other corner, take soem flakes and with them in your fingers, put them under water. After 1 or two seconds, release and they should float down.. so the Comet can eat them.

Would this work?

They should be in a bigger tank, 5 gallons is no where near enough to house the two fish. In a larger tank, especailly if planted food will be spread over larger areas, a good current from a filter will help this and your comet is more likely to have a chance to feed. You could also try some sinking pellet foods if it favours sinking foods. :)

I already clarifyed that.

Thanks everyone for your advice :)

goldfish need 20 gallons for the first fish and 10 for each additional fish!
your plan to upgrade to a 10 gallon tank is not good enough.
those two fish will need at least 30 gallons.

please do some research before purchasing fish.

Ok, I asked for help, not to be insalted by know-it-all fish keepers more apparently that are " more experienced than me ". I happened to do research on the goldfish, and at the moment, they are very very small, and will not grow to full size in a long time. 10 gallons is just FINE for now, I also have a back-up pond for them when they become of size. I think that you, The-Wolf, did the right thing by telling me that they needed a bigger tank, but was very rude about it. Your really setting a nice example for the friendliest forum around :grr:

I happen to do a partial water change every week, I do not overfeed, and I keep ontop of the ammonia levels. I am not one of those fish owners that think they can just throw any fish into any size tank.

how do you turn sound advice into a insult ?
your fish are small but the fishes growth rate is determined by the size of the tank ,i would suggest that wolf (as blunt as always ;) ) is correct and you havent nearly done as much research as you think you have ,10 gallons isnt fine in fact it isnt a tank its a bowl all be it square ,i see nothing rude or P@##Y in wolfs answer and id also ask you to mind your language ,this is a family orientated forum with many youngsters reading the posts

im with the others here joel. the tank is nowhere near big enough for two growing goldfish. do partial water changes every three days and as to feeding them get the greedy one to feed in a corner first and while he is busy, at the other feed the other one. :)

I got a little upset, only because the-wolf was just a tad rude in his/her reply. Im sorry, I guess you cant expect everyone on forums to be perfect :p im rude too  thanks for the advice on my goldfish everyone

dude give the guy a break... he already stated that he is going to get a bigger tank. He just needs some advice his fish, im sure he's not some kind of fish torturer considering he is seeking advice on his fish in a fish forum.

hes stated that there in a 5 and hes moving them to a 10 ,for 2 fish he requires at least (and im talking minimum here) 25 gallons and for 2 fish and thats still border line
fair dos hes moving them to a pond but the point everyone is trying to get across is that the growth rate will be stunted ,its very difficult when typing not to sound rude lol
in fact wolf how dare you type in that tone of voice lmao
its not rude ! blunt maybe and to the point which is often the best way to give advice

anyway dont mind me i just like a lively debate and often try and get the posts to be more interesting eh angel ;)

joel dont take offence m8 but the advice is sound its up to you if you follow it or not :kana:

I don't feel my reply was rude: emotionless, factual, blunt yes but not rude.
I'm sorry to have caused any offence, it was not ment.
