This weekend my older sister will be giving me her 46 gallon aquarium and as soon as I clone a filter, I will be moving my two goldfish into said tank, as well as getting /one/ more fancy (I hope only one, they're so cute >___>) and I was wondering if I might have room for some dojo loaches. Those are the coldwater ones, right? I haven't picked out a filter yet, but I was looking at a 350 GPH one, it's a biowheel filter. Also, can you have those loaches in with apple snails? I wanted some of those too, but If I couldn't have them with the loaches I was just gonna get the loaches. Loaches or no?

Dojo or weatherloaches are fine up to temps of around 26 degrees, so basically they are coldwater or the cooler end of tropical. I used to keep my weatherloach in with goldfish when I had them, and they got on absolutely fine. I keep 3 in my tropical tank.

Goldfish can be wasteful, so the loaches are a good cleanup crew. Since applesails are pretty big they should be fine, the loaches won't be able to eat them. They are a social fish, and in a 46 gallon you can have at least 4-6. They become pretty tame as well. One of mine comes sucking at my fingers for treats whenever I have my hand in the tank :hyper:

I'd try to get the biggest filter you can. An external cannister filter would be a better choice if you can afford it, more room inside for media and more bacteria. Golds are really messy so you'll need as much filter capacity as possible.

Ah, thank you. Now I definitely can't wait to get the new tank. Another goldie AND some super-cute loaches. And I was going to try to get the biggest filter I can afford, but canister filters are pretty expensive. I WANT one, though, lol. Thanks for the help! ;3

Good stuff. Have you looked around for a second hand one? My Eheim 2215 external cannister came free with my 30 gallon tank, which I bought at a car boot sale for £22 ( so about $50 or so ) :hyper: It's worth a look around at any rate.
