Goldfish Sinking?

Hi All,

I inherited a tank several weeks ago, with a goldfish in it. The tank is just over 12 inches and he has seemed fairly happy until yesterday.

He seems to enjoy swimming (but he wobbles, a lot!). And today, I saw him hiding underneath the bridge that is in there. He only just fits in there, and it looks like he does it to stop him floating to the top maybe? But he will not come out. He isn't dead as I do see him swimming around.

Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks,
Amnesia

what are the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings of the water?

a 12" tank is nowhere near big enough for a goldfish, sadly.

Hi,

I'll do a test this afternoon and let you know. We took the tank off a relative who was just waiting for it to die. We cleaned it out, done it up etc. Looks like it may have been kinder to let it die than keep it in the tiny tank.

Fish don't have to live in glass tanks; that's just for our convenience of looking at them.

You could get a large storage box from a DIY place and put him in there to give him some more room.

We have a large DIY box I could fill with water. But I feel the filter won't be powerful enough for it?

We did add a rather large bridge to the tank, so I think he feels cramped because of that (The person who had him before us kept him in the same tank and he always seemed fine). I'm going to take out the decorations and see if that helps at all.

I feel so cruel and sorry for this goldfish :(

He may have swimbladder. observe his actions if he has difficulty swimming he may have swimbladder. treat him carefully. vary his diet. and feed him peas. this apparently helps the swimbladder.
