Goldfish Should Never Be Kept In Bowls!

If I worked in a pet store I would just sell loads of tanks and filters sometimes setting them up is half the fun after all marketing is just education (keeping your job?)
Is there actual laws for being crual to fish anyone know?

The surprising thing, is the art department at my school has a goldfish. In a bowl. (No filter)
It's called Picasso and it's lasted over a year.

I did a water test on it recently with a friends help:
Ammonia: 0.50ppm
Nitrite: 0.50ppm (Or something high, cant quite remember)

..I'm confused at how it's alive.

Because goldfish are naturally tough animals. This is one reason why they are so common in the hobby in the first place. If they were less hardy perhaps they wouldn't be so abused.

Most people say "oh its been there a year and its fine" forgetting that goldfish can live for 20-30 years so when theirs dies off at 5-6 they think it's had a "good life"....

Ditto Lunar - as Derp said Surviving isn't thriving!

Go to the head of department, and give them a link to Fluttermoth's thread, which both I and Chad linked to. Also let them know that these animals are supposed to live 20 years and more.

Here here! Well said and very informative for those who aren't in the know.

Oldest goldfish on record was a comet won at a fair and kept in a pond all it's life, it was 43!
That's impressive.
To put it in perspective for all you guys who keep goldfish in bowls and think eyre happy cos they live for a couple of years.

My mum is still quite stubborn on having goldfish because when I was younger she had 4 comets in a small tank (about 25 litres maybe?) and she wouldn't clean for 10 weeks and then when she did clean them she would just put them in a ice cream container and empty all the water and replace the filter. They lasted at least 2 years until we gave them away when we moved.
So sadly my mum is one hat believes that goldfish are fine in bowls. :/ Though I think I've explained to her enough times that its finally starting to get through...hopefully!

It's a hard message to get over until you mention the size they should grow to and how long they should really live and even then there are some hard-liners who just won't listen. Can't make everyone believe unfortunately!

Especially with that ' fish only grow to the size of their tank ' rumor.

FYP.

"rumor" implies that it may be true, fallacy states unequivocally that it isn't.

What about a fish tale?
