Hi

Not reallt an emergency but I do not want these fish couped up in their little tank any longer than necessary. :(

We have just aquired 2 goldfish from someone who is unable to look after them any more. They are in a 1 and a half gallon tank with no filtration. A couple of questions;

1) is this tank big enough for them? Water changes will be regular (every week)

2) can they go in my main tropical setup? (see sig)

Any help greatly appreciated as I KNow NOTHING about goldfish. :-(

Cava :fish:

one word answers both questions

NO!

sorry to seem harsh but this is a big bugbare of mine

Thanks Danio.

Not harsh if its true. Do you know if goldfish need filtration or what size of tank they need without filtration?? They have been in this small one for over a year and look fine and healthy - good colour, finnage all ok, no lethargy etc.

What should I do???

Thanks for being understanding

There is a pinned topic (by me) Here that gives you a guide to the requirements.
The reason not to keep goldfish in tropical water is that it will speed up their metabolisum and therefor they will poop more and more, they are already a big popper so this will be very bad for you tank. Also goldfish can carry some diseases that will kill tropical fish.
HTH

I cant really upgrade the size of tank too much - can they go in someones pond??

Dont ask what sort they are I've no idea!! They are bright orange.

yes any medium to large pond will do. they sound like common goldfish and can live for upto 45years in the right conditions

yo,

if 1 goldfish is good for 20 gallons, than 2 goldfish sure are not good in a 1 gallon (I assume .5 is gonna due to gravel and plants or rocks.

I'd leave them be until you can sort out proper acomodation for them. Like Danio said the tank is far too small and they are not good in tropical tanks.
The reason why I say the above is because although it's not ideal the fish are in good health, moving them around loads until you get them sorted may just stress them. ;)

Thanks guys.

Will have to ponder this one I think. If I had the choice of a second small tank it would be to raise fry etc not to keep goldfish in. Not that goldffish are horrible or anything just prefer my tropicals. :p

Thanks again. :flowers:

Well if you don't on upgrading just for them, do your fish a favor and give them to a better home. You can post a message in the classifieds in this board ''free goldfish to a good home'' don't for get to ask them what size tank they will be putting them in 20gal+ for just those two. Ask them about their water quality, Nitrate close to 0, Nitrite 0, Ammonia 0, and such. Ask them what other fish they will be keeping the goldies with. Common sence questions. You're more likely to get a response out of this fish borad though, considering they only deal with goldies. http://www.goldfishparadise.com/forum/phpB...wforum.php?f=17

I will find them some decent lodgings somewhere - it looks like its going to be a pond though.

Will they survive in an outdoors pond if all they have ever known is the safety of a tank (albeit a little one)? Will they make the transition ok or are there thngs that live in ponds that will kill them/eat them?? Like bigger koi or goldfish?

As you might be able to tell I dont know anything much about ponds either!

I know about herons before you all say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, do you know anyone with a pond? They may or may not survive all winter in a pond but that depends on, the location of the pond, the depth of the pond, and how bad the winters are in your area. I know that the ice on our lake last winter was 30'' thick. If I would have had a pond, they would have all died. In cases like this, you need to make sure the person brings them indoors in the winter.

For ponds in the UK a minimum of 2.5ft(below ground) will be needed to
winter fish outside.

there should be no other fish in a graden pond that will kill the goldfish.
Goldfish are very hary and therefore should easily adapt to thier prefered enviroment.
