This may be a dumb question. Not sure.

Can i cycle a planned freshwater tank with goldfish? It's a 10 US gal. and i was planning on using small comets to cycle it. Is there any reason this won't work?

Thanks in advance!

I'm no expert on goldfish but they produce ALOT of ammonia, and an uncycled tank will not be able to cope with this buildup, even with good filtration (for goldfish all your water should pass through the filter 10 x an hour). I'd suggest you go with a fishless cycle instead, as its quicker + easier + does not harm any fish, If you do decide to go with using fish to cycle it, try white cloud mountain minnows or zebra danios: both are hardy enough to survive.

Goldfish are pretty hardy so you could but I don't know how long it will take. Bacteria develop quicker at higher temperatures (85F and above) and goldfish are coldwater fish so your temp would be under 76 probably. Also, goldfish are big waste producers so you would probably have high ammonia readings pretty quick and be relagated to daily or twice daily water changes to keep the levels down. I would strongly recommend a fishless cycle. The 10 gallon definitely won't be big enough for goldfish (as they grow). What would you do with them once the tank is cycled?

I was going to feed them to my blue lobster. He eats about 1 every 2 weeks or so.

I was thinking about doing a fishless cycle, but since i buy feeder fish anyway, i thought that would be easier.

if its tropical why not try zebras they are hardy

Well, i am not sure what i want to put in the tank. My 35 gallon is pretty much at its stocking limits, so i wanted to cycle the 10gal and figure it out in the meantime.

so that begs the questions.

What should i put in it? I was thinking either a single fish or a mated pair.

any suggestions.
