hi ive herd that u can put goldfish with tropical .. i just want to no but i never will because it will look stupid

Goldfish grow quickly. My guys grow about an inch a month and they eat anything that will fit into their mouth. They are already over 3" w/o their tail. One of them on a board I was on had swallowed a cory and got it stuck in its mouth.

Also some tropical fish are fin nippers that make goldfish lives not so fun : ( Thats how I got into aquariums - I took an orange oranda home from the collision shop I was at getting a car fixed - his fins were torn to shreads. He looked beyond pathetic.

I love goldfish - puppy dogs of fish. Just set up my first tropical tank and I'm loving them also (just wish I knew what was causing them to stress out).

why would it look stupid? :grr:
i had a goldfish and a black moor in a tank with tropical fish. it didn't look stupid at all.
some tropical fish, such as angels, look elegant when swimming and goldfish aren't exactly elegant swimmers but i would never say it looked stupid x

I have kribs, gouramis, Ram and firemouth so it would look stupid

you shouldnt keep goldfish with tropicals becuase the warmer water does all sorts of nast things to them.

shortens there life and speeds up there metabolism for a start.

having said that i think some of the fancier types can be kept in slighlty warmer water (20-22 degrees).

See my sigfile and you will see I have a goldfish with tropicals.
I know he really shouldn't be in my tank and I have had several discussions on here about re-homing him. At the moment he is nearly 2" long and gets on very well with his tank mates. However, in the spring time next year I shall be moving him into my mum's pond, which will be alot better for him.
But as things stand at the moment, all my fish get along well.

Regardless of "looks", this hardly qualifies as the "average", fairly peaceful tropical community tank. Tthese fish are mildly to quite aggressive, and would at best nip the fins of the slower goldfish and at worst kill them. Some of the more peaceful tropicals like livebearers or tetras can, as regards temper, get along OK with goldfish.

That said, DON'T DO IT.

Tropicals areenviornmentally incompatable in nearly every way with goldfish.

Goldfish are:
  • coldwater fish that like a
  • high PH and a
  • diet very rich in plant matter
Most community tropical fish like
  • a PH closer to neutral
  • water between 5 and 15 degrees warmer and
  • a (generally) higher protien diet
If you put tropicals in a tank properly set up for goldfish, they will likely die very quickly. If the cold water or the high PH don't kill them, the excessive waste production by the digestively inefficient goldfish will.

Goldfish put in a tropical tank seem to survive a little better, but they SURVIVE, not thrive. They still have stunted growth, shortened lifespans, higher disease rate, more different diseases, and other, less easy to pinpoint, ailments where they just don't do "right". Basic tropical flake is too high in protein for most goldfish, and can lead to severe constipation issues, which over time can also lead to other illness. The higher temperature weakens their immune systems. The lower PH lowers their resistance to parasites and infections.

For the proper, humane care of both types of fish, do NOT mix goldfish (or other coldwater fish) and tropicals.
